蛍ほたるの光ひかり、窓まどの雪ゆき　書ふみ読よむ月日つきひ、重かさねつつ

The years flew by, and this morning, I’ll open the frugal door and leave.

いつしか年としも、すぎの戸とを　あけてぞ今朝けさは、別わかれゆく

Since it’s only for today for both who staying and who leaving, there are so many thoughts each other,

止とまるも行ゆくも、限かぎりとて　互かたみに思おもう、千万ちよろずの

but I’ll just sing a word from the end of my heart, “Be safe”.

心こころの端はしを、一言ひとことに　幸さきくと許ばかり、歌うとうなり

The origin of the beginning of the lyrics, “Hotaru no Hikari Mado no Yuki” comes from the Chinese story “Keisetsu-no-kou“.

歌詞かしの冒頭ぼうとう「蛍ほたるの光ひかり 窓まどの雪ゆき」の由来ゆらいは、中国ちゅうごくの故事こじ『蛍雪之功けいせつのこう』です。

Most people in Japan know the lyrics of No. 1 and No. 2, but many Japanese born after World War II do not know the existence of No. 3 and No. 4. (I didn’t even know.)

一番いちばんと二番にばんの歌詞かしについては、日本人にほんじんの殆ほとんどが知しっていますが、第二次大戦だいにじたいせん以後いごに生うまれた日本人にほんじんの多おおくは、三番さんばんと四番よんばんの存在そんざいを知しりません。（私わたしも知しりませんでした。）

Frankly, the lyrics of No. 3 and No. 4 are completely different songs.

三番さんばんと四番よんばんの歌詞かしは、はっきり言いって、全まったく別べつの歌うたです。

Although the edge of Kyūshū and Tōhoku are far apart by the sea and mountains,

筑紫つくしの極きはみ、陸みちの奥おく　海うみ山やま遠とおく、隔へだつとも

its faith doesn’t be separated. Be dedicated exclusively for the sake of the country.

その真心まごころは、隔へだて無なく　偏ひとえに尽つくせ、国くにの為ため

至いたらん国くにに、勲いさおしく　努つとめよ我わが背せ、恙つつが無なく

The lyrics No.3 and No.4 make the impression of the whole poem different considerably, isn’t it?

三番さんばん、四番よんばんがあると、詩し全体ぜんたいの印象いんしょうもかなり変かわってきますよね。

It can be seen that Japan in the early Meiji era (Empire of Japan) was trying hard to protect its territory by including its principle in the lyrics of this song.

明治めいじ初期しょきの日本にほん（大日本帝国だいにっぽんていこく）が、この唱歌しょうかの歌詞かしにその主張しゅちょうを込こめて、懸命けんめいに領土りょうどを守まもろうとしていたことが伺うかがえます。

Furthermore, it seems that the lyrics of No. 4 had changed at least four times by the former Ministry of Education due to the definition, exchange, expansion, and reduction of Japanese territory.

更さらに、日本にほんの領土りょうどの確定かくてい、交換こうかん、拡大かくだい・縮小しゅくしょうなどにより、四番よんばんの歌詞かしは旧きゅう文部省もんぶしょうの手てによって少すくなくとも四度よんど、手てが加くわえらたようです。
