Once upon a time, an old man and an old woman were living in a snowy village.

As they were living in extreme poverty, it didn’t seem likely to be able to prepare mochi for the upcoming New Year.

However, they noticed that the sedges that had been cut during the summer were piled up in the corner of the dirt floor of an empty house.

The old woman asked the old man, “Why don’t you make a sedge hat from that sedges and sell it in the town?”

The old man replied, “That’s good. Let’s do it.”

When the sedge hats were completed, the old man carried the five hats on his back, told the old woman, “I’ll bring back a lot of mochi and foodstuffs.” and he went out to the town alone in the snow flurries.

The town held a New Year’s Eve market and was crowded with New Year’s shoppers.

The old man raised his voice and said, “Do you want a hat? Do you want a hat?”

However, no one stopped at the old man’s voice.

Before he knew it, the sun was beginning to set.

Reluctantly, the old man gave up selling the hats and decided to go home.

The old man muttered to himself, “Perhaps no one would buy hats on New Year’s Eve. Oh, how disappointed the old woman would be if I went home without even having mochi.”

When the old man came to the plain field on the outskirts of the village, he was hit by a terrible snowstorm.

At a casual glance, there were six Jizōs standing on the side of the road.

“Oh, I’m sorry. Indeed, you must be very cold.”

The Jizōs were buried in the snow on only one side because it was a windswept field with no halls or shades of trees.

“This Jizō-sama has his cheeks frozen. And then, this Jizō-sama has an icicle hanging from his nose.”

The old man scraped off the wet and cold snow that was on the Jizōs.

“Oh, yeah! please wear this hat.”

The old man put the hats for sale on the Jizōs and tied the strings tightly at their chins so that the hats would not blow off in the wind.

However, although there were six Jizōs, only five hats were in his hand.

Therefore, the old man said, “I’m sorry, but please wear my tenugui .” and put the tenugui that was full of patches which he was wearing until then on the last Jizō.

“All right.”

After saying that, the old man finally went home with relief.

“Grandmother, I’m back now”

The old woman welcomed the old man returning home.

“Grandfather, it must have been cold.”

And then, the old woman asked the old man, “So, did the hats sell?”

The old man replied, “Well, the hats didn’t sell at all, and I put them on a few Jizō-samas who were buried in the snow on my way home.”

Then, without becoming unpleasant at all, the old woman said, “Oh, that’s a good thing you’ve done. The Jizō-samas must have been cold also. Now, grandfather, come and warm yourself at the hearth.”

While warming himself at the hearth, the old man said, “Well, it’s finally an occasion welcoming a new year without mochi. Then, maybe I should imitate mochi pounding.”

The old man imitated mochi pounding and hit the edge of the hearth.

Then the old woman laughed and imitated the companion role of the mochi pounding along with him.

That night, they ate pickles, drank hot water, and went to bed.

In the middle of the night, they woke up to the voices of a sled-pulling chant.

The chant was approaching their house instead of the rich family’s residence.

When the chant stopped in front of their house, there was the sound of something heavy being dropped.

As they timidly opened the door and looked out, five Jizōs wearing hats and a Jizō wearing a tenugui were about to return home pulling an empty sled in the snow.

There were glutinous rice bales, various foodstuffs, and New Year’s decorations under the eaves of the house.

They were gifts from the Jizōs to the old man who gave them the hats.

Because of this, the old man and the old woman were able to have a very happy New Year.

They lived happily ever after.
